What lengths am I willing to go to in order to do right. by every child?
A common misconception is that a teachers job is nice, simple and easy. The truth is that it is not like many think. A teacher is responsible for so many things aside from educating academics to students.Specially because all of the students come from different backgrounds and have had different experiences due to their culture. As mentioned before aside from teaching, a teachers job is also to make all students feel confident and safe with who they are. To accomplish this there is only so many things that a teacher can do. The real question is how far, what length or what measures are teachers willing to go for their students. As I was reading through this weeks module, on a teacher should be culturally responsive, there were some words that stood out to me which I chose for my WORDitOut. I choose these words because I was able to connect them with the importance of being a teacher who goes above and beyond for their students and how they should respond to having a diverse classroom. The words that most stood out to me from my list in that aspect were Respect, Patience, and Challenge.
- Respect; I chose from the article “ I wont learn from you”.It was used to defined how the grandpa felt disrespcted when they tried to have teach him english. But in a teacher aspect, a teacher should respect any thought and opinion that the students have. All students will have different opinions, mainly because they have had different experiences. even if she disagrees. By showing respect to them the teacher is letting them know that she cares about their opinion and that they have valid points even if he/she dont agree. This will make the students feel more safe and comfortable about sharing their thoughts.
- Patience;I chose from a task on the module. Patience is something that many people lack, yet is such an important quality that a teacher must have.Going back to having a diverse classroom, this only means that all students are different in every possible way. None of them will learn or understand by doing the same lesson or activity, specially because there is students who English wont be their first language. This explains why a teacher should go out of their way to take time, and be patient with their students.
- Challenge; This word came from one of the videos where one of the students was describing his experience.Challenge is a word used to describe a situation that seems hard to overcome without pushing yourself. Both the students and the teachers are being challenged by being in a classroom that culturally diverse. In which some students or the teacher themself dont feel comfortable being in. But the real challenge for the teacher is having to be open to all the cultures and languages, in order to help the students. Each teacher has to do everything in their power to be able to communicate with the families, to teach and help indiviually when needed. But most importantly a teacher should be up and ready to overcome any challange in order to do what's best for the students.
Hi Mariela! To begin, I want to agree that teaching is seen as a very simple job. When in reality it comes with so many challenges because we want to do right by our students. As people, we all have our own characteristics that support who we are but also portray our personalities. This correlates to how far we are willing to go for our kids. I really like how you explained each of your words from your Worditout using the evidence from the passages and videos we had to look over. The word challenge stuck out to me the most. The way you said it is something to overcome without pushing yourself, I felt isn't always true. I believe you can push yourself and even give up at times but it's something you continue to pursue which makes it a challenge. Nonetheless, I loved reading your blog and think you did a really great job!
ReplyDeleteHey Heidi! Thank you for your comment, I really liked how you said that it is okay to give up at times. I completely agreed with that. Sometimes you do have to let yourself fall in order to get up again
DeleteHey Mariela! Awesome job on this week's question blog post. I believe that you answered the question that was provided very well by saying, “I would go any length or at least attempt to, to do right by every child. As future teachers I believe that we should all be passionate about helping our students in every way because we don't even know what they have experienced or are experiencing.” I think that I would answer this question the same way. We can not do this and stay true to the answer unless we step into the real world and realize we have to create peace in our classrooms and to do that we have to bring in real life tough situations that can not be sugar coated and have a talk about them with our students. We have to bring in other cultures and learn about each other. Thank you Mariela!
ReplyDeleteHi Megan! In my opinion, I also believe that there is certain real life situations like you said that are very hard to sugar coat, and many times these situations are the ones that affect the students the most. But then again as teachers talking about these situations with our students is always the best things we can do; and even better if we can count on the parents as well. Also, thank for your feedback!
DeleteHi Mariela, thank you for sharing your blog! I like all of the words you have chosen for your word cloud, they are definitely things a teacher should be especially the three big ones you explain. Respect is hugely important, I bet we can all list teachers we did not have respect for and most of the time the reason behind it was because the teacher did not equally respect the students. Respect given is respect earned and students refuse to learn from a teacher they don’t respect. My favorite word from your word cloud is consistency and I do not think most people know about its importance. One of the teachers from my high school days that I respected and trusted the most used the same system for every class he had even though the topic was different, this allowed his students to know exactly what to expect everyday they walked into his class. Anyway, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. I enjoyed reading them!
ReplyDeleteHey Bailey! Consistnecy was also one of my favorite words.I can also recall some of my teachers doing the same thing as your teacher. I feel like not just as a teacher but even as a person; one is always more productive when we are being consistent or keeping a routine. Thanks for sharing!
DeleteHi Mariela, I really enjoyed reading your blog. From the opening sentence of stating the misconception of teaching to the 3 words that really stood out to you, I really enjoyed reading. I agree with one of your last statements about not knowing what our students have experienced. I agree because every student is different and has their own story so it is important to understand that every student has had different experiences in life so that we as teachers can try to do right be every student. I would like to add to the bullet point "challenge", I think you explained it great and that it is true that as teachers we need to overcome challenges I also think as teachers it is our job to overcome challenges with our students to help them grow as well as grow ourselves. Thank you for your blog.
ReplyDeleteHey Alex! I definitely agree with you. I think that we as people never stop growing or learning even as adults, and the challenges we face do help us grow. Thank you for your comment!
